Discussing Our Opening Scene - Kye, Maryam, Jack and Klevis
Today we spoke to professional film maker Finola Geraghty about our opening sequence and what is good and what should be changed with improvements to it. We discussed our use of True Detective inspiration and it was taken as a good idea. The use of double exposure within our opening scene was seen as a good idea however, she did say that our opening sequence needed a clear narrative throughout to show what the actual film would be about.

True Detective Opening Sequence Analysis - Kye, Jack, Maryam and Klevis
Our opening credits is inspired by True Detective, as it also uses the double exposure effect. We decided to analyse this to help us find our vision for our coursework.
Firstly, we will analyse sound. We think sound is a very important part of setting up the atmosphere in a opening credits. The song used in this sequence sounds very country, which compliments it, because the show is set in Louisiana. The song choice is so important that it affects the editing too. The slow pace of the song, means that the editing is slow too. We sort of have a sound in mind for out sequence.
Secondly, the mise-en-scene. The sequence features various symbols that contribute to the story. The showing of suited men, tells us that this is crime thriller. The cross, tells us that the story has a religious theme to it. The screenshot to the left is my favourite scene of the sequence. From the cross symbol places above his head, tells us that this protagonist is very religious. The fire around him, and how he looks down connotes that he is a troubled character.
Thirdly, the editing. As i said before the editing matches the song tempo. The sequence has a very desaturated yellowish colour to it. This reflects the countryside element of Louisiana. When the song reaches the bridge, which is about the 2nd half of the sequence, the colour scheme becomes pure black. We also see the use of fire. These elements represent the darkness of the show.
Fourthly, cinematography. The sequence uses a variety of shots. The most common one in this is the mid shot. This is mostly towards the start. As the sequence go on, the shots become closer, which connotes intimacy. There is even a extreme close up of an eye. The shots are in slow motion, to fit the pacing of the song.

For the opening credits, we had an idea where the first half would have a blue colour theme, whereas the second half would be red and become more chaotic. There is this sequence where a victim gets her throat slit, so it'll become red from there. This idea was inspired by the True Detective opening credits, where the 2nd half would be black colour, with additions of fire. Kye made 2 sample screen shots.

Coursework Screenplay - Kye, Jack, Maryam and Klevis
Tonight, we wrote the screenplay for our opening credits sequence. Our screenplay for our opening credits screenplay has no dialogue, so as a group we looked at other films with no dialogue in their opening sequences. We did this in order to get some inspiration on how to write the script. We got most of this inspiration from the script for Wall-E which is extremely good. This is because it is a well written script and just by reading it we imagined the set up of the movie as a whole. The next step is to do a commentary on the storyboard we made.
