AS MEDIA; What next? - Maryam

Now that the opening sequence has been completed and handed in, the final thing left for me to do is the evaluation and ... THE EXAM!!!

These are the questions that we will be answering:

  1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media  products?
  2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?
  3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
  4. Who would be the audience for your media product?
  5. How did you attract/address your audience?
  6. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
  7. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

Coursework Final - Kye, Jack, Maryam and Klevis

The Guardian Movie - Jack

On our trip to the guardian, we made movies using iMovie and footage that they had given us for personal use. I think I did a good job on this movie and I enjoyed editing and using this software.

The Guardian; Practical work - Maryam

On the 2nd of March, i had the privilege of going to The Guardian. As this is part of the exam course it was very essential to attend and also gather information. In pairs we were asked to use different clips and create a story/ sequence. This is what my partner and i came up with using Imovie.

Template Change - Jack

As a group we agreed to change the background template, mainly because it was too bright and we needed to make it darker and become more of a thriller themed background. I added a dark background to bring the feeling of thriller and made orange the main font colour as it stands out ahead of the white titles and black background. I think this looks much better than before as it stands out much more and is better on the eye.

Feedback from Second Draft - Maryam, Kye , Jack, Klevis

In addition to our positive feedback, we were also given tips on what we could do to create more mystery to opening sequence.

These consisted of:

  • The music should start a second before our film ident comes in at the beginning of the sequence.
  • J cut could be used between the ident and the first clip that is played.
  •  Having objects etc at the beginning and the characters revealed towards the end i.e. Traffic shot before Maryams shot.
  • "A Trident Pictures Production" comes in later.
As a group we have taken on board al of these tips and have started making minor changes to our sequence.

Audience Feedback - Maryam

During my free time yesterday, i was able to get some audience feedback from three different groups of people about our draft. I received a lot of positive feedback which made me extremely happy. The only EBI that was said, was about the victim and the antagonist in the background. Therefore we have started to alter this shot and identify other ways in which we could get our message across. Other than that, everything is going according to plan ;)

Cinderella Film Analysis - Maryam

I recently watched 'Cinderella' (2015) directed by Kenneth Branagh. Although I have watched it quite a number of times I was more than happy to watch the non-animated version. The scene that was really effective in my opinion is when Cinderella meets her fairy God Mother. The use of close ups and various different shots from different angles really set the mood and made you feel as though you were there. I would recommend this especially if you are a Disney fan or enjoy romance films.

The Order of Our Opening Scene - Jack and Kye

Here is our order for the names of our actors and the order each shot will actually go in and be presented. We jotted some notes down on the paper so it is clear to us when putting it together.

Group update- Maryam, Kye, Jack and Klevis

In todays lessons, we got some more feedback from a director who came in to see our work. We have started filming our new shots in in order to replace them with our old shots that we feel do not work as well as others. We have also started thinking of many more meaningful shots we can add to our sequence. Our aim is to complete this by the end of the week.

Draft Feedback - Kye, Maryam, Jack and Klevis

Today, we received feedback from the focus group. These are the things we picked up:

  • Clips were too long.
  • No titles.
  • Sound should be in sync with clips.
  • Colouring issues.

We will take these into account to make a perfect 2nd draft.

BFI Southbank trip - Maryam

Yesterday, the year 12's went on a trip to the BFI Southbank. We watched trailers for films and answered questions which included; how it would appeal to a Uk audience and a Us/International audience. In addition,we watched the film '71' and had the privilege of meeting the producer, finding out background information and asking personal questions. I gained a lot of information through the day and felt it was very effective.

Coursework Draft 1 - Kye, Maryam, Jack, Klevis

Draft Last Day - Jack, Kye, Klevis and Maryam

Today is the last day to hand in our first draft and we are not the happiest of people. Our first draft is quite good in our opinion but we need much more time to make our project the best it can possibly be. We have finished our different after effect pieces but we feel they can all be shot much better and edited even more than they already are. It is important that after this draft is given in, we get to work on an improved version of our work so it becomes better than before. We hope it can improve drastically.

Lesson Update - Kye

Today, I put together a lot of the double exposure scenes. I learnt a lot of about After Effects today, but I still find it very difficult.

Title Idea - Maryam

In the lesson, i have thought about and researched some titles for out opening sequence. As a group we decided that we need a specific type of handwriting to stand out and flow with the background. I used Font space and came up with this. The titles will be in Capitals.
This is the link http://www.fontspace.com/hypefonts/neoteric. There are many fonts to use and choose from.

Coursework Titles Idea - Kye

I like the titles in this opening credits. I would want the titles in our coursework, to be like this, which is slick and clean.

Update - Kye, Jack, Klevis, Maryam

We are finishing up the first draft of our coursework. Kye is in the process of making the music. Klevis did editing. Kye and Jack did research on titles. Maryam has loooked at different music ideas as well as fonts to use for the title.

Main Titles - Jack

Today I had a small go at creating a main title for the end of our double exposures in our opening sequence. We haven't 100% decided on a name and so I just used an old name from a while ago. I tried to include the genre of our film in the title to make it flow better with our double exposures. This was just a brief attempt as I haven't done anything on after effects in a while and so I wanted to try and get back into understanding it. I will be making a full draft of it between tomorrow and next Friday to put into our draft.

Our Target Audience - Jack

We need to consider the ways that the audience may view our film, thinking about the different things they will want involved to enjoy the film and actually find it worthwhile. This is important as they are a key way of seeing whether our piece is good or bad as they have an interest in the thriller genre.

Bafta Guru Search- Maryam

I searched Bafta Guru and did a profile on the actor Idris Alba. The clip speaks a lot for itself. This is a strong inspirational speech from Idris Alba.

Ink Drop - Maryam and Kye

In todays lesson,Myself and Kye were able to get some footage for our sequence. It took awhile for us to find the lighting before taking our footage. However we successfully got our footage and it came out just as we thought.

Tuesday 19 January 2016

Green Screen Prep - Jack, Kye and Maryam

Today we ironed our green screen, preparing it for our filming now and in the coming days. This will allow the green screen to come out better and more effective in our filming.

Best Thrillers Ever Made - Jack

I had a look into a couple of the best thrillers of all time. These films are being rated on audience reviews and opinions as well as complete in depth looks into the films from various sources.

Two of the films which I found to be the best thrillers of all time were the films Se7en and The Departed. These films were seen to be top films of this genre which many people took a liking for in many different ways. These films had top directors, David Fincher and Martin Scorsese and won Scorsese his Best Director Oscar.

The Best Films

Se7en - The film that established David Fincher's apparently inseparable relationship with the darker side of human existence, this film sidesteps the cliches it appears to bury itself in, two mismatched cops, one black, one white, the old-timer on the edge of retirement and a brilliant serial killer with a twisted methodology with fierce intelligence, in an unusual density of literary reference and through exceptional performances from a top cast, with Morgan Freeman's haunted Somerset and Brad Pitt's feisty Mills more than ably matched. A top thrill in this film comes in the long foot chase midway through the film that really gets the energy high.

The Departed - The film that finally won Scorsese his long overdue Best Director Oscar, as well as Best Film, The Departed is similarly a remake of the Hong Kong thriller Infernal Affairs, but with entirely different emphases and twists. Perhaps surprisingly for Scorsese, this tale of a cop posing as a mobster (Leonardo DiCaprio) and a mobster doing the same (Matt Damon) is often as laugh-out-loud funny as it is suspenseful, with great comedic turns by Mark Wahlberg and Alec Baldwin as the police and a wonderfully over the top Jack Nicholson as Costello, the head of the Boston mob. This film is full of thrills, most notably when Di Caprio and Damon meet within the film.

I really enjoyed watching both of these films as they each brought something different, using things individual to the directors and actors. They were very good watches and both were quite intriguing.

Target Audience of Thrillers - Jack

Different Thrillers are set on targeting different types of audiences, specific to the ones that they like the best themselves.

There are Psychological Thrillers which are usually set to an audience of 18+ as they include a lot of violence and issues that could be quite disturbing for the younger generation. Usually on the DVD case or in the movie description it will have a warning on whether it is suitable for who you are. The plot of Psychological Thrillers usually have something to do with characters fighting each other with their minds and trying to defeat each other. An example of a Psychological Thriller is Fatal Attraction.

Crime Thrillers are thrillers that have a clear focus that the characters etc, are trying to break the law in some kind of way. The police feature in this type of thriller quite a lot as they are trying to solve something or are involved in some kind of way. Villains are usually the criminals and have done something bad that they need to be stopped for. An example of this is Silence of the Lambs.

Romantic Thrillers are usually relationships with a small aspect of a thriller involved in them. They are rarely seen and very hard to make as the plot is very difficult to produce and takes a lot of time to think of a good one. These are usually female dominated and have something to do with their relationship problems and a twist on it. An example of this is the movie called Old Boy.

A Supernatural Thriller is one which involves some kind of supernatural, unusual movement along with a thriller genre flowing throughout. Usually the main character will have some kind of special psychic ability that they use to their advantage and develops many twists in the movie. The main audience gender is females with this type of thriller. An example of a supernatural thriller is The Exorcist.

Action Thrillers involve many scenes of violence, to do with gun combats and many car chases, a lot of movement and high levels of energy taking place. More blood scenes are shown to emphasise the dramatic effect of the violence taking place in the movie. An example of this is The Bourne Identity.

Our thriller movie is looking to be in the bracket of Crime and Action as we have the ideas of both, involved in our intentions of the movie plan. We think these will work best in what we are looking for in a film and think it will be the best type to create. As ours will be very energetic and involve aspects of crime, a mix of the two is probably the easiest to describe what we are going for.
